Why UK plumbers should stop ignoring Meta

Ask most UK plumbers where their leads come from and the answer is roughly the same. Word of mouth. Checkatrade or MyBuilder. Google Local Services. Maybe a small Google Ads spend. Meta Ads, for a long time, was "for restaurants and clothing brands, not for us."

That's a mistake and it's costing you jobs. Meta is where UK homeowners spend their evenings, and homeowners are the buyers of every high margin plumbing job you sell. Boiler swaps, bathroom fits, heat pumps, unvented cylinders. These aren't decisions people make from a Google search at 9am. They're decisions people make after weeks of scrolling, seeing your work, seeing your reviews, and finally clicking when the current boiler starts making that noise again.

Meta gives you the one thing Checkatrade, MyBuilder and Rated People will never give you: exclusive leads that were never sold to your competitors. On the shared broker networks, the same homeowner enquiry gets sold to three or four firms simultaneously. First one to call wins. Everyone else eats the cost. Meta cuts the broker out entirely.

The other reason plumbers should care about Meta in 2026: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. The £7,500 grant for air source heat pumps is one of the highest intent lead magnets in home improvement right now. Meta is the perfect channel for it. More on that in section 6.

CPL benchmarks by service: boiler, bathroom, emergency, heat pump

Cost per lead varies wildly by service. A £30 emergency plumbing lead makes sense because the job pays £180 the same day. A £30 boiler install lead makes sense because the job pays £3,000 in a fortnight. But you need to know which is which so you can spend your budget where it actually pays back.

These are the ranges we see across our UK plumbing and heating clients once campaigns settle in (usually 30 to 45 days):

Service Exclusive CPL Shared broker CPL
Emergency call out£8 to £18£30 to £60
Boiler installation£15 to £35£60 to £120
Boiler service & gas safety£6 to £14£20 to £45
Bathroom installation£20 to £40£70 to £140
Air source heat pump£25 to £60£90 to £180
Commercial / landlord contract£40 to £120Rarely available

The exclusive column is what our Meta and Google campaigns deliver. The broker column is what shared lead sellers charge for the same enquiry, resold to three or four of your competitors. You aren't just paying more, you're paying more and then losing four out of five of those leads to whoever answered the phone first.

The maths on boiler installs is the story. Let's say your average install nets £600 profit. Even at a £35 CPL with a conservative 15 percent conversion, your cost per install is £233. That leaves £367 clean profit per boiler. Do that 20 times a month and it's £7,340 profit on £700 of ad spend. That's the model working properly.

The emergency vs planned funnel split

The biggest mistake plumbers make with paid ads is running one campaign for everything. Emergency call outs and boiler installs are completely different buyers doing completely different things at completely different times. They need different funnels.

The emergency funnel

Someone typing "plumber near me now" or "boiler stopped working" is not scrolling Facebook. They're on Google, in panic, wanting a phone number. Your emergency funnel needs:

The planned work funnel

Someone thinking about a new boiler, bathroom or heat pump isn't in panic. They're researching. They're scrolling. They're asking the wife. They're comparing three quotes. Your planned funnel needs:

Rule of thumb: if the buyer's problem is happening right now, they want a phone number. If the buyer's problem is coming (boiler dying, bathroom outdated, energy bills too high), they want information and a quote. Build both funnels. Route the traffic accordingly.

The 5 step system that fills plumber diaries

Ignore the tactics for a minute. This is the acquisition system, at a system level, that our plumbing and heating clients run:

  1. Service specific landing pages. One per service line. Boiler install page. Bathroom page. Heat pump page. Emergency page. Each with its own creative, qualifying form and follow up flow. Not one homepage doing all the work.
  2. Split channel: Google for emergency, Meta for planned. Google search sits above the funnel for people typing urgent queries. Meta sits at the top of the funnel for people who don't know they need you yet.
  3. Speed to lead automation. SMS within 60 seconds of form submission. Email with quote pack and warranty details within 5 minutes. Call attempt within 15 minutes if lead scores "hot" (owner, high urgency, in catchment).
  4. Survey booking with reminders. Same day or next day survey slot offered by SMS link. 24 hour SMS reminder. 1 hour SMS reminder with engineer's photo and van reg. No shows drop below 10 percent.
  5. Post job nurture. Warranty registration, review request via SMS, annual service reminder 11 months later, cross sell to bathroom or heat pump 6 months later. One boiler swap becomes three visits over the customer lifetime.

Gas Safe, OFTEC and ASA: what you can and can't say

Plumbers are one of the most regulated trades on Facebook. Gas Safe register is legally required for gas work. OFTEC covers oil. ASA governs everything you say in an ad. Get any of these wrong and you're looking at ad rejections, account restrictions, or worse, a Trading Standards complaint.

Gas Safe

You can display your Gas Safe registration number in creative. In fact you should. It's the strongest single trust signal in the sector. What you can't do is imply a level of certification you don't hold, use the Gas Safe logo without complying with their brand guidelines, or reference "Gas Safe approved" when you mean "Gas Safe registered" (they're not the same and Gas Safe don't "approve" firms).

OFTEC

If you install or service oil boilers, OFTEC registration is the equivalent. Same principle applies. Display the number. Don't overstate the certification. Don't run ads for oil boiler work under a Gas Safe registration alone.

ASA CAP Code

Efficiency claims must be substantiated. "Save up to 40 percent on your heating bills" needs a real basis (typical A rated combi vs 15 year old G rated, published Energy Saving Trust data, your own case study numbers). "Guaranteed lowest price" is almost always non compliant. "Fully qualified" without saying qualified in what will get pulled.

Finance messaging is now under Consumer Duty. 0 percent APR ads need FCA authorisation displayed. "From £30 a month" needs a representative example (deposit, term, APR, total amount payable). Skip this and Meta will flag your account.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme angle (£7,500 grants)

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is the single biggest lead magnet in UK home heating right now. The UK government pays homeowners £7,500 towards an air source heat pump install. The homeowner doesn't have to apply for anything themselves. The installer (you, MCS certified) applies on their behalf and deducts the grant from the invoice.

If you're MCS certified for heat pumps, you should be running dedicated BUS campaigns on Meta. The creative writes itself: "The UK government will pay £7,500 towards your new heat pump. Here's how to claim it before the scheme changes." Postcode qualifying form. Survey booking. Job done.

Even if you're not MCS certified yet, this is worth becoming certified for. The lead volume, the ticket size (£12,000+ jobs), and the exit multiple (heat pump specialists sell at 4 to 6x EBITDA in current market) all favour installers who move now while the scheme is running.

Two compliance points on BUS creative: don't misstate the grant amount (it changed in Oct 2023, may change again), and don't guarantee eligibility upfront (properties need to meet MCS conditions on insulation, existing system type and property size). Qualify the lead before you promise the grant.

Seasonality: how to flex budget through the year

Plumbing is one of the most seasonal trades in the UK. Ignore this and you'll waste budget in July and starve for leads in October. Rough shape of the year:

Period What sells Budget move
Sept to NovBoiler swaps, gas safety, cover plans, heat pumpsPush 60 to 70% of annual budget here
Dec to FebEmergency call outs, breakdown repairsEmergency campaigns cranked, planned work paused
Mar to MayBathroom fits, central heating upgradesRotate creative to planned work, bathroom focus
Jun to AugBathroom fits, wet rooms, unvented cylinders, commercialReduced volume, higher ticket work, commercial push

The move most plumbers miss is the September pre winter push. Homeowners think about boilers when the heating comes on and something makes a noise. Get in front of them in the last week of August, first two weeks of September, with "Time for a new boiler? Book a free survey before winter" creative. You'll fill November's diary in a fortnight.

Creative that actually books boiler quotes

Meta creative for plumbers is the difference between £40 CPLs and £15 CPLs. Same offer, same funnel, wildly different results based on what's in the video.

What works

What doesn't work

6 mistakes plumbers make with paid ads

  1. Running Meta and Google as one campaign. Different buyer stages. Different creative. Different landing pages. Never merge them.
  2. No qualifying form. A form that says "name, phone, email, submit" wastes your time on tenants, wrong postcodes and tyre kickers. Ask 3 to 5 qualifying questions.
  3. Waiting more than 5 minutes to respond. Buyers who wait 24 hours for a call back have already booked with the firm that called back in 2 minutes.
  4. Ignoring winter emergency demand. December to February is when call outs peak and margins are highest. Most plumbers under invest in emergency ads exactly when they should invest most.
  5. Not tracking install source. "The Meta stuff isn't working." Yes it is, but you're not tracking which install came from Meta vs Checkatrade vs word of mouth. Set up UTMs and CRM tagging or you're flying blind.
  6. Chasing lead volume, not customer lifetime value. 10 boiler swaps at £600 profit each is £6,000. Those same 10 customers, if you nurture them into a cover plan, an annual service and a bathroom refit 5 years later, are worth £15,000+ over the customer lifetime. Ad budget follows LTV, not first job margin.
